1964 ALFA ROMEO GIULIA 1600 SPYDER
COACHWORK BY PININFARINA
Chassis No. AR 379860
White with green leather upholstery
Engine; four cylinder in line, 1,570cc, twin cam overhead valve, 104bhp at 6,200rpm; Gearbox: five speed synchromesh; Suspension: independent wishbones and coil springs; telescopic shock absorbers with anti-roll bar at front. Left hand drive.
The Giulia range was introduced by Alfa Romeo in 1962 as an innovation of the earlier Giulietta. The larger engine gave an increase in output of 12bhp for virtually no increase in weight. With the Giulia, Alfa Romeo upheld their tradition of superb handling and lively performance, a legacy of the long and glorious racing history of the marque.
Like the Sprint coupe, there was little substantial change to the design of the Spyder with the change to the Giulia engine and five speed transmission. A hood bulge, nicely formed into a fullwidth scoop, was provided to clear the taller block of the 1600 engine.
This superbly presented Spyder has two owners from new. The current owner purchased it around ten years ago. The low mileage of around 21,000 is believed from new. The car has been restored to show standard in recent years. Around five years ago the car was subject to a bare metal repaint. After a recent inspection underneath the car, we can confirm the car was equally well presented and has been well undersealed. Less than 1000 miles ago the engine had a major overhaul. In the interior, the owner custom fitted green leather to the upholstery and door panels at the same time new carpets were fitted, a tremendous improvement on the original vinyl. The interior chromework was either rechromed or replaced and a new black top was custom made and fitted. This Alfa also comes with a new set of Pirreli tires.
These charasmatic Alfa Romeos are a joy to drive. They offer good looks, spirited performance and responsive handling. In the Spyder version the driver benefits from the five speed gearbox and true open air motoring. This delightful low-mileage example warrants close attention from any 1960s Alfa enthusiast.
