Cephas Thompson was born in Middleboro, Massachusetts on July 1, 1775. He painted extensively throughout New England and the southeastern states from about 1804 until his death in 1856. He painted full-sized portraits as well as bust portraits and mourning pictures. His advertisements were published in newpapers in Alexandria, Richmond and Norfolk, Virginia and Charleston, South Carolina.
