Lot Essay
These side chairs are directly adapted from plate XVI of the 1762 Edition of Thomas Chippendale's Director. A variation of gothic splats with sparce ornamentation, these chairs exhibit the same profile of cabriole legs and ball and claw feet as the carved legs on the set of chairs made for David Deshler of Germantown, PA (Christie's October 18, 1986, Lot 512). An identical chair with similar splats on squre legs is illustrated in Horner, lue Book, Philadelphia Furniture, William Penn to George Washington (Washington, 1977)p. 200, pl.323.
