Lot Essay

The change in the facade of the American factory, the removal of the fences lining the harbor in front of the American factory, and the inclusion of the French flag indicates that this painting was executed between 1800 and 1803. A similar painting in the collection of the Peabody Museum of Salem is illustrated in Carl L Crossman, The Decorative Arts of The China Trade, (England, 1991) p. 425, fig. 6.
