1961 AUSTIN MINI "COOPER"
Chassis No.A2S7L28632
British racing green with a yellow top and white stripe black interior.
Engine: four cylinder, 1,275cc, 45 side draft Weber carburetors; Gearbox: four speed manual; Suspension: independent front and rear; Brakes: front, disc, rear, drum. Left hand drive.
From the moment the Mini arrived in 1959 it was obvious that Alec Issigonis' brilliant concept of putting an independently sprung wheel at each corner with a transverse engine in unit with gearbox and front-wheel drive, was an ideal recipe for superlative handling. All that was needed was more power, which was forthcoming in 1961 coupled to the name of racing car manufacturer John Cooper. Various engine sizes were offered in Mini Coopers over the years, the car on offer here has been uprated to the desirable 1,275cc engine, more commonly found in the Mini Cooper S.
This Mini has been subject to extensive overhaul to racing specification. As well as a larger engine, the Mini offered here is also equipped with two 45 side draft Weber carburetors, spax shock absorbers, dry suspension, steel braded brake lines, Austin America master brake system, fuel cell with steel container and a fire system with ports on driver and motor, amongst other racing refinements. The cockpit has also been upgraded to a racing specification with a racing seat, 3 point harness, and cage. In the last two years the Mini has successfully raced twice, in night enduros, with only five hours recorded on the engine. The car also comes with a huge number of spares including body panels, wheels, engine blocs, crankshafts and gearbox casings, provided that the purchaser pays the shipping costs. To prepare or duplicate a vintage racer to this standard would far exceed the estimate. There are bills in excess of $8,000 that accompany the Mini. It is eligible for the popular VARA and SVRA vintage events throughout the U.S..
