1953 FERRARI 212 INTER COUPE
COACHWORK BY PININFARINA
Chassis No. 0279 EU
Engine No. 0279 EU
Ferrari red with cream leather interior.
Engine: Ferrari V12, 2,562cc, 68x58.5 mm, 180bhp at 5,500rpm, triple 36 DCE3 Weber carburetors; Gearbox: five speed manual; Suspension; front, independent double wishbones, transverse leaf springs, rear, rigid axle, semi-elliptic leaf springs; Brakes: four wheel drum. Left hand drive.
The Ferrari 212 series was among the first collaborations between Ferrari and Batista Farina's world famous Carrozzeria Pinin Farina (later Pininfarina). It formed the basis of a successful relationship lasting more than forty years with Pinninfarina as the sole arbitrator of design for Ferrari.
The rolling chassis for the 212's were delivered by Ferrari to the old Pinin Farina works at Corso Trapani, Italy, where the bodies were expertly hand crafted. The entire plant production of Pinin Farina for 1953 was only 902 cars, a clear statement of Battista Farina's mandate of, and commitment to, quality.
This late production 212 Inter Coupe was delivered new to Chinetti Motors in New York, the U.S. Ferrari importer. The car was delivered with the triple carburetor configuration, more typical of the export version, used at the time for Ferrari's racing efforts. The engine developed some 40bhp more than the standard 'Inter' version, enabling the famed Ferrari power and acceleration, combined in this car with the comforts and luxurious interior appointments compatible with Grand Touring standards of the period.
A comprehensive professional frame-up restoration was completed on the car in 1993, with receipts for this work totalling in excess $100,000. The engine underwent a complete rebuild at Epifani Restorations, San Francisco. It was dissasembled and all appropriate parts cleaned and magnafluxed. The carburetors were removed disassembled and fully rebuilt. All engine hardware was removed, repaired where necessary, cleaned and plated or painted with black oxide. The inlet manifold and heads were repainted, the heads resurfaced, the distributors overhauled, and the crank ground and polished. Other detailed mechanical work was also performed. Supporting documents of this work available on request.
In the same fashion as the engine rebuild, the car's cosmetic restoration was performed with fine attention to detail. The interior utilised high quality hides and carpets. The paintwork was completely redone to show quality, and all chrome brightwork has been restored by Stockton Plating. Since the completion of this restoration, the car has been maintained to the same exacting standard.
This 212 Coupe (Pinin Farina build number 10932), has recorded 11,000 kms. All available evidence supports this reading to be original and correct. The car has been resident in the dry California climate for over thirty years and comes with its California title. Since its restoration, the car has been track tested at Sears Point Raceway (video tape available on request). This 212 would be eligible for most touring events and was displayed at the 1994 Concours Italiana at Monterey, as well as the Beverly Hills Ferrari North America Concours d'Elegance in 1995.
WITHOUT RESERVE.
