With a name derived from the Stutz-built land speed record car which the exceptionally talented driver Frank Lockhart drove to 198.29 mph at Daytona Beach, the Black Hawk signaled a return to exciting sporting car offerings by the Indianapolis firm.

Dual sidemounted tires, racing style cycle fenders, a sharply-tapered boattail body, wire wheels and a fully removable top gave the Black Hawk the same rakish panache of the predecessor Bearcats. If America produced a sports car capable of international stature and performance during the last of the Roaring '20s, the Black Hawk was surely it.

To prove its capabilities, a single Black Hawk was entered in the 1928 Le Mans 24 hour endurance race and nearly beat the then dominant 4½ liter Bentleys at their own game. Despite losing high gear an hour before the race's finish the Stutz still took second behind the winning Bentley. A worried W. O. Bentley later wrote that "The Stutz was particularly formidable with its lower frame and superior cornering to the Bentley...."

High praise indeed from one of the acknowledged automotive design geniuses of all time, especially for a "Yank" car.

This Black Hawk is generally in sound condition and quite restorable. The rear compartment upholstery is poor but otherwise the interior, top and side curtains are intact and suitable for restoration patterns.

When properly finished, this motorcar should present an exceptionally attractive and sporting appearance and offer the same sort of sparkling performance its designers at Stutz had originally intended.

This car is recognized as a Full Classic by the Classic Car Club of Ameica and is eligible to participate in all of the club's activities. Additionally, it is eligible to participate in racing and rallying events of the Vintage Sports Car Club of America as well as several other vintage racing organisations here and overseas.
