Lot Essay
In 1866, Herman Böhm founded his leading Viennese firm, which continued to produce objects through the beginning of the 20th century. In the late 19th Century, the firm crafted precious metal, enamel and rock crystal objects in the Mannerist and Renaissance styles. The style and craftsmanship of such objects earned Böhm international acclaim when he displayed his work at the Vienna Exhibition in 1873 and at the Paris Exhibition in 1889.
The drinking horn model is traditionally associated with Teutonic and Nordic ancient ceremonies and the hunting motif on this particular horn further evokes the golden age of such ancient traditions. The image of the cupid upholding the horn is originally derived from the sixteenth century Nuremberg standing cups where the figure of Atlas was used to support a globe. However, the use of rock crystal was only revived in Vienna once the Hungarian mineral mines were made accessible following the Unification of Germany in 1871. (see M. Winterbottom & J.
