The gilt bronze and enamel dial housed within a shaped case with an open central compartment and glazed sides, the angles mounted with Harpy supports ending in scrolling feet, surmounted by a figure of father time, raised on a conforming base, panelled on the interior with 'boulle' marquetry, the whole fitted with ormolu masks, scrolls and garlands

Lot Essay

This clock is a model of the Pendule aux Harpies by A.-C. Boulle and was derived from a print by Jean Bérain which is now in the Cabinet des Estampes, Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris. The model is discussed by H. Ottomeyer & P. Pröschel, in Vergoldete Bronzen 1986 vol. II, pp. 485-488, fig. 156 and is illustrated in Tardy's La Pendule Française, Paris, 3rd edn., n.d., p. 307, figs. 504 and 505
