A FINE AND RARE BARBED BRONZE MIRROR
TANG DYNASTY

Of octafoil shape, well cast in crisp relief with a circular medallion of equestrian archers and hunters in pursuit of various animals including a deer, a hare, a boar and a lion above a band of grassy tufts encircling the central, crouching animal boss, all within the slightly raised, shaped outer rim cast with a single floral spray or insect at each of the eight points, the bronze with a silvery patina and areas of malachite encrustation

Compare the mirror of this pattern, also with foliate rim, included in the exhibition, Treasures from the Shanghai Museum, Queensland Art Gallery, 1990, Catalogue, p. 130, no. 72, where it is noted that a similarly decorated mirror was unearthed from Tang tomb no. 90 at the Wangjiafen site in the eastern suburbs of Xian city, Shaanxi province, March, 1995
