The larger carved all around in imitation of a vertical scholar's rock with layered surfaces, the crevices applied with clusters of green-painted pine needles, with traces of blue pigment; the smaller a brushrest formed as five craggy peaks carved around the sides with bats, bamboo and lingzhi fungus, with blue pigment, gold dots and traces of red, raised on a separate ivory base with wave border

The style of the larger of the two 'rocks' is similar to an underglaze blue-decorated porcelain example in the Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art, London, illustrated in Oriental Ceramics, The World's Great Collections, vol. 6, Japan, 1982, pl. 187
