Lot Essay

This surcoat would have been part of a set of garments, worn over another robe with a red ground and side opening, probably with an identical pattern. A good example of this type of matched set was included in the exhibition, Chinese Textiles, Spink & Son, London, December 5-23, 1994, illustrated by Jacqueline Simcox in the Catalogue, nos. 54 and 55. Compare, also, the surcoat sold in these rooms, September 21-23, 1995, lot 530
