BABE RUTH "MURNANE DAY" TROPHY
Tim Murnane played baseball for Harry Wright's 1877 and 1878 Boston Champions, managed Boston in 1884 (Union League) and became a sportswriter and later sports editor of the Boston Globe. He died in February 1917. On September 27, 1917 the Red Sox hosted a game in honor of Tim Murnane to benefit his family. The activities included a game between the Red Sox and an All-Star team including Cobb, Jackson, Ray Chapman, Weaver, Shocker, Ehmke and Johnson. Babe Ruth pitched for the Sox and won 2 - 0. An account of the game is found in The Boston Red Sox by Fred Leib (Putnam, 1947) in which Leib writes In pre-game events, Ruth won the prize for hitting the longest fungo ....This is the trophy awarded to a young Babe Ruth that day. The trophy is engraved Presented by H.H. Frazee to "Babe" Ruth for long distance fungo hitting - distance 412 feet, 8 inches - Murnane Day - September 27, 1917. Perhaps Ed Barrow took note and began the conversion of the star pitcher to the slugger/outfielder the following year. 13½ inches high
