TED WILLIAMS TROPHY
In 1952 when Ted Williams was called to duty in Korea, Boston play by play announcer Leo Egan created a trophy in Ted's honor and a contest among the other Red Sox. During Ted's service two players, Jimmy Piersall and Jackie Jenson won the contest for which they received a new car and their name engraved on the trophy. The trophy is a large sterling silver bowl by Rondahl for Shreve Crump and Low, Boston, weighing over seventy ounces. It is fourteen inches wide and nine inches high mounted on a silver bordered ebony base. It is offered with a letter of authenticity from Leo Egan, a letter from Jimmy Piersall, a letter from WBZ Radio and two photographs of Egan with Piersall receiving the car and Egan interviewing Williams on his return from the service. The only trophy to bear the name of Ted Williams. (8)
