Lot Essay

The younger woman bears a resemblance to Lola Montez. Based on Stashin's research, it is known that Lola Montez played a deaf mute in Yelva, or The Orphan Girl of Russia, a role one could easily believe she is representing in this image. Nonetheless, this is a striking example of an improvisational interaction between the older woman on the left handing the other a daguerreotype case.
