Lot Essay

Abbott made this simple, classic portrait of Joyce during her second sitting with him in 1928. Abbott's first work in photography was with portraiture, which she felt were a test of an artist's ability to capture the most essential qualities of a subject. Her images of Joyce are some of the best known from her portrait work of the 1920s in Paris. Early prints of this portrait are rare.
