Lot Essay

According to an old label on the reverse, the present painting and its pendant were commissioned by the Duke of Madeloni for his Palace near Naples. It was probably purchased in Italy at the sale of the effects of the Duke of Madeloni by or for the architect, Wilson Eyre, one of the founders of the American Arts and Crafts movement and founder of the magazine House and Garden.
