Lot Essay

During the 19th Century, dies for Proof coinage were heavily polished with soft rags. On occasion, a small piece of lint would remain on the die face. These pieces of lint were subjected to such intense pressure when the dies came together that they would leave a tiny impression in the planchet when the coin was struck. Today, these tiny impressions, often appearing as tiny stringlike marks, are known as "lint marks."
