Lot Essay

Gold Dollars were coined from 1849 through 1889, inclusively. The first type featured a Liberty wearing a coronet and was struck from 1849 through 1854. In 1854 the style was changed to a tall narrow head of Liberty wearing an Indian war bonnet: this type was coined in 1854 at Philadelphia only, in 1855 at Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dahlonega, and New Orleans, and in 1856 at San Francisco only. The type III Gold Dollars feature a modified Indian Head of Liberty (See the next lot).
