In his series of monographs on early United States gold varieties, published in the late 1950's and 1960's, as well as in his later studies, Walter Breen identified about a dozen die combinations of the 1795 Half-Eagle with small eagle reverse. The variety offered here, Breen 1C (obverse 1, reverse C), is among the rarest of those varieties.
