GENERAL JACKSON PREPARES TO BECOME FLORIDA'S FIRST GOVERNOR TERRITORY
A letter, to a would-be newspaper publisher, concerning commercial opportunities in the newly opened Florida territory, written only days before Jackson took up his post as Military Goveror of Florida: "...I leave...for Pensacola from which place, as soon as I arrive, I will give you my opinion concerning the object of your enquiry, I have heard already of several persons intending to establish themselves in Florida for the purpose of Editing papers, [and] proposals, as issued by two Gentlemen of Nashville to Commence with the Organization of the Government. Feeling Sir, every disposition to serve you, I shall take the earliest opportunity to advise you of whatever advantages that country may present. I regret the treatise or memoir of which you speak did not come to hand. I thank you for your map of Florida..."
Jackson served as Military Governor for just a few months in 1821.
