[8 July 1804]. 1 page, 12mo, 126 x 102mm. (5 x 4 1/16 in.), neatly mounted, stain and tear at left-hand edge with loss of several letters, in French.

"I have the honnor to recommend W Jerzmanowski, a distinguished officer who can render great service to France." Kosziuszko had studied artillery in France, offered his service to America in 1776 and played an important military role in the American Revolution. Returning to Poland in 1784, he fought for the cause of Polish independence, was imprisoned by Russia for two years and later lived in exile in Paris and Switzerland. Kosciuszko's letters are uncommon.
