Early, "Old Jube" voted against Virginia's secession, but led a brigade at First Bull Run, in the Peninsular Campaign, at Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness and Spotsylvania. His raid on Washington, D.C., to divert Federal troops from Lee's front in Virginia, was successful, but he was outgeneralled by Sheridan in the Shenandoah Valley Campaign and relieved of his command. He emigrated to Mexico and Canada before returing to the United States to practice law in Lynchburg, Virginia.
