FILLMORE, MILLARD, 1800-1874, President. Autograph letter signed ("Millard Fillmore") as the Whig Vice-Presidential candidate, to John Harris, Albany, 3 August 1848. 1 page, 4to, 250 x 195mm. (9 7/8 x 7 5/8 in.), integral blank, lightly browned.
FILLMORE ON HIS VICE-PRESIDENTIAL NOMINATION
Fillmore thanks a friend and political supporter: "...Please accept my grateful thanks for your congratulations at my nomination for the Vice Presidency. It was unlooked for at this time, though I had some faint hope when you so generously volunteered for me in 1844. Be assured that kindness is not forgotten. The free soil question is giving us some trouble, but yet we are confident of carrying this state. Whigs will see that the only question is between [Lewis] Cass & [Zachary] Taylor and they will never throw away their votes to secure the election of [the Democrat] Cass..."
The presidential election of 1848 pitted Whig Zachary Taylor against Democrat Lewis Cass and Free Soiler Martin Van Buren. This three party race enabled Taylor to achieve the presidency, but he died of cholera morbus on 9 July 1850. As Vice-President, Fillmore succeded Taylor; he was not, however, chosen to represent the Whigs in 1852.
