JOHNSON, ANDREW, 1808-1875, President. Autograph note signed ("Andrew Johnson") as President, n.p., n.d. [Washington, D.C., c. 1865-1868]. 2 pages, oblong, 64 x 93mm. (2 1/2 x 3 3/4 in), 12 lines plus signature on an oblong card, in pencil, lightly browned.
PRESIDENT JOHNSON REQUESTS "A SPECIAL FAVOR"
A characteristically brief note in which the President asks a favor for a friend: "You will please permit [me] again to introduce to your favorable consideration Mr. Philips of the N Herald [sic?]. If you can make some appointment that would be suitable to Mr. Philips it will confer a special favor on me. Mr. Philips will explain to you the character of the appointment..."
Handwritten letters and even brief notes such as the present from Andrew Johnson as President are quite scarce.
