LINCOLN, ABRAHAM, 1809-1865, President. Autograph endorsement signed ("A.Lincoln") as President, to Secretary of State William H. Seward, [Washington, D.C.], 5 September 1861. 5 lines plus signature and dateline, evenly browned, small stain at top affecting one word.

A typical note of referral from the overworked President, who frequently used such small blank cards for rapid communications with the cabinet or military officials. Here, Lincoln instructs Seward to confer with a General: "Sec. of State, please see, and converse with Gen. Kimmel, who is a State Senator of Frederick, Maryland. A. Lincoln." Published in Collected Works, ed. R.P. Basler, 4:511. Anthony Z. Kimmel was the commanding General of the Fourth Division of Maryland Militia.
