Napoleon comments on a document signed by Prince Corsini, an Italian nobleman, by which he swears allegiance to the Emperor and to the French Republic as perscribed by the "droit de guerre de S.M. L'Empereur." Napoleon adds a cryptic comment at the bottom: "Sent back to the staff officer in order to provide him with a safeguard..."
