PICKERING, TIMOTHY, 1745-1829, Adjutant General, Continental Army, Postmaster General. Autograph letter signed ("Tim:Pickering") as Quartermaster General, to Colonel William Hull, "Commanding at West-Point," Newburgh, N.Y., 22 March 1784. 1 page, 4to, integral address leaf, 232 x 186mm. (9 3/16 x 7 5/16 in.). ARTILLERY CAPTURED FROM THE BRITISH. A fine letter regarding two captured cannon: "The commissary of military stores desired me to call on the commanding officer at West Point for two pieces of cannon, brass six pounders, that are trophies [won in battle] to be engraven for General [Nathanael] Greene...to the order of Congress...They must have carriages complete..." A Harvard graduate, Pickering served as a militiaman at Lexington & Concord and then in the regular army throughout the war, notably as quartermaster general. After the war, he was in succession Postmaster General, Secretary of War, Secretary of State and Senator.
