LINCOLN'S "LITTLE LADY WHO STARTED THE CIVIL WAR" QUOTES HANDEL'S Messiah

Just after the publication of her enormously popular novel Uncle Tom's Cabin, Harriet Beecher Stowe pens a prophetic quotation from Handel's great oratorio for an apparent admirer: "The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness. Prepare ye the way of the Lord! Make strait in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be brought low and the crooked shall be made strait & the rough places plain. And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed & all flesh see it together..."

Harriet, daughter of Lyman Beecher and sister of preacher Henry Ward Beecher, became a dedicated member of the abolitionist movement; Uncle Tom's Cabin created a sensation and solidified anti-slavery opposition in the North.
