SPRING IN VALLEY FORGE: RECRUITING TO REBUILD THE CONTINENTAL ARMY
Wayne, soon to prove one of Washington's most successful and aggressive field commanders, instructs two Continental army recruiters, trying to replenish the depleted ranks of the American army, which had suffered severe losses from illness and desertion during the brutal Valley Forge winter encampment (December 1777 through June 1778). Capt. Bower, in a bold, ornate hand, tells the General that, "The bearer, Capt. Jacob Mauser and Lieut. Philip Gibbons of the 6th Pennsylvania Regiment waits on General Wayne for Instructions to go recruiting..." Wayne replies: "You are to wait on his Excellency Govr. Wharton at Lancaster [Pennsylvania] where you will receive Cash and Instructions..." Beneath, a note in another hand identifies this as: "instructions...to recruit in Berks. County."
