These chairs with veil-drapery festooned over medallions relate to a suite supplied in the 1780's for Holkham Hall, Norfolk as part of the furnishings carried out under the direction of the architect Samuel Wyatt (d.1807) (see H.A.Tipping, English Homes, period V, vol.I, 1921, p.314, fig.380). The Wyatt family of architects enjoyed a close working relationship with Messrs. Gillow, cabinet-makers of London and Lancaster, and a chair design of the 1780's in the firm's archives also features an upholstered panel framed within the chair back (see L.Boynton, ed., Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, 1995, pl.266).
