This chest directly copies a design by Thomas Shearer published in The Cabinet-Makers' London Book of Prices, 1788, pl.17. The Book of Prices was a practical trade manual for cabinetmakers which contained tables of prices to assist masters and journeymen in calculating the cost of labor (G.Beard and C.Gilbert, eds., The Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840, 1986, p.806).
