A GEORGE II WALNUT OPEN ARMCHAIR

The arched padded back, seat and arm rests upholstered in contemporary gros and petit pont needlework depicting phoenixes and flowers flanked by acanthus-carved handholds and similarly carved scrolling arm supports above a shaped seatrail centered by a foliate clasp, on cabriole legs with cabochon and foliate-carved knees and scrolled toes, needlework worn and split at center of back and seat, one side bracket missing

A closely related armchair with carved back frame was sold Christie's London, 18 April 1996, lot 144. Others of the same pattern from Sandon Hall, Staffordshire are illustrated in C.Aslet, 'Sandon Hall', Country Life, 13 June 1991, p.177, fig.6.
