BUCHANAN, JAMES, President. Autograph letter signed ("James Buchanan") as Senator, to Colonel C.W. Gooch, Washington, D.C., 7 March 1841. 1 page, folio, 320 x 202mm. (12 1/2 x 8 in.), integral address leaf slightly soiled, otherwise fine.
[With:] Autograph free frank ("Free James Buchanan") on integral address leaf addressed in Buchanan's hand to "Col: C.W. Gooch Richmond Virginia," orange circular "Washington, D.C. MAR 8" postmark, with "FREE" handstamp.
Three days after President William Henry Harrison's inauguration, Senator Buchanan purchases bonds and praises a Virginia Whig. Buchanan has received the "four James' River & Kanawah Bonds for [$500.00] each, & owe you many thanks...This business is now closed...I do not expect to be able to purchase any more of these Bonds for some time to come. I am much pleased that the Democracy of the Legislature of the Ancient Dominion did not compromise their principles or render their position equivocal by making a selection among the Whig Candidates for the Senate. They sustained a man who was worthy of them...It would be difficult to find a more honest, independent & high souled patriot; & in him is embodied they very essence & spirit of the ancient Virginia Republicanism..."
William Henry Harrison the ninth President, served the shortest term of any President. He died exactly one month after taking office of "bilious pleurisy."
