THE SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE PLANS AN OVERNIGHT COACHING TRIP WITH LADIES

Representative Polk hires a coach and gives detailed instructions for the planned excursion: "I wish to engage a Coach, from Fredericktown to Wheeling [West Virginia], to leave the former place...on the 17th...My company will take and pay for the whole coach; and as a part of our number will consist of ladies, one object we have in view, in chartering the whole coach is to avoid being too much crowded. We wish to take your hire whilst travelling through in day-light, permitting the passengers to sleep at night...If you can furnish the coach...please...write me a letter..."

While they are not as rare as Polk's Presidential franks, Polk's pre-presidential franking signatures are scarce. The present is a very fine example.
