PRESIDENT TAYLOR ACKNOWLEDGES "A PAIR OF SPECTACLES MOUNTED IN CALIFORNIA GOLD"; AN EXTREMELY RARE FRANK AS PRESIDENT

Seven months before his death, President Taylor thanks a soldier for a souvenir of the '49er Gold Rush: "I have the pleasure long since to receive a pair of spectacles mounted in California Gold, which you had the kindness to present to me, but have inadvertently omitted to acknowledge them until now. If not too late, will you please accept my very sincere thanks for this handsome & most acceptable present..."
Taylor's Presidential franks are very rare due to the brevity of his tenure in the White House (March 1849 through July 1850). Phillips, American Stampless Cover Catalog, vol. 2, p. 215 records "none" as President.

Exhibited: World Stamp Expo '89, Washington, D.C., 17 November--3 December 1989.
