Lamar (1798-1859) had commanded the Texas cavalry at the battle of San Jacinto and afterwards rose rapidly in the Texas government, serving as attorney general and Secretary of War in Burnet's cabinet, Major-General of the Texas Army, Vice-President under Houston and, finally, in 1838, President of Texas.
