BARTLETT, JOSIAH, President and First Governor of New Hampshire, Signer (Massachusetts). Autograph free frank ("Josiah Bartlett") as Governor of New Hampshire, on an envelope addressed by him to "Mr Reuben True Salisbury," n.p., n.d. [docketed 12 February 1793]. 1 page, 4to, folded to 65 x 93mm. (2 5/8 x 3 3/4 in.), recipient's docket, minor stain in blank portion, clean tear crossing "Bartlett," without loss. [With:] A finely rendered 19th century pen-and-ink portrait of Bartlett, unsigned.
A RARE FRANK OF THE MASSACHUSETTS SIGNER
A very rare frank, once part of the Stern collection. Phillips (American Stampless Cover Catalog, p. 201), does not record franks as Governor of New Hampshire. Bartlett (1729-1795), a physician by profession, was an early supporter of Independence and, as a delegate to the Continental Congress, served on many important committees, helped in the writing of the Articles of Confederation and aided in the ratification of the Constitution.
