Lot Essay

According to Pat Halfpenny in English Earthenware Figures 1740-1840, Woodbridge, 1991, pp. 92-93, the rebus mark of a stand of trees has traditionally been ascribed to Ralph Wood, although there is apparently no real evidence to support this. It would appear that this mark is only found on figures of Apollo, which date from 1780-1800 and could have been made by any of the Woods.
