A CHARLES II STUMPWORK AND SILK-EMBROIDERED CASKET
circa 1660
The hinged lid with hinged upper compartment enclosing a silk and velvet-lined interior with removable mirror, open and closed compartments, pen tray, a pair of glass bottles with pewter lids and secret drawers, the front with a pair of doors enclosing three short and one long drawer on brass feet, the front worked with Sheba and Solomon with attendants and initialed in pearls 'MG', the sides with allegorical figures of Faith, Hope, Charity and the Senses, the lid with a figure of abundance, with figures and flowers, worked on a long stitch ground with stumpwork, purl stitch and applied with pearls, the interior bearing a paper label 'BRITISH ANTIQUE DEALERS ASSOCIATION ART TREASURES EXHIBITION CHRISTIE'S 1932, NO. 302', within its original oyster-veneered olivewood and holly carrying case inlaid in concentric circles with hinged lid and front, later velvet-lined interior and bun feet
