The arms are those of Giffard with those of Hyde on an escutcheon of pretence, as borne by John Giffard of Plâs-Ucha, Flintshire, Wales, who was the third son of Peter Giffard (d. 1746) of Chillington. John Giffard, who is presumably the sitter, married Elizabeth, daughter and heiress of Robert Hyde of Nerquis, and by her had two daughters, the last of whome died in 1742.
