Lot Essay

The famous 'Cap of the Monomach'; the ancient, hereditary crown of the Tsars was, according to legend, sent to Rus by the Byzantine emperor Constantin Monomachos and which from the late 15th century onwards was their official symbol of the autocracy. The above symbol was used in 1913 by Fabergé in a number of jewellery designs for the Romanov tricentenary. See A. K. Snowman, Fabergé: Lost and Found, (London, 1993), p. 126 and 136.
