Lot Essay

Balthasar Friedrich Behrens (b. 1701), the court goldsmith, a Hanover silversmith, was commissioned by George II to make silver for Herrenhausen, his palace in Hanover. This commmission included domestic silver such as casters as well as the elaborate and well-known Hanover Chandelier sold from the Collection of Hubert de Givenchy, Christie's, Monaco, December 4, 1993, lot 95. Much of his work is in the English style, of which these candelabra are a good example.
