In the French taste, fluted oval, on four acanthus feet, the sides applied with laurel garland, with two upswept leaf-clad handles and tied-reeded rim, the stand elongated, on four acanthus bracket feet, with leaf-clad reeded rim, the raised center with laurel band and acanthus calyx, with plain liner, the stand and liner engraved with crests, the tureen engraved with a coat-of-arms, crest and motto with scroll mantling and within applied scroll cartouche, marked under tureen and stand

Lot Essay

The arms are those of Duncmobe with those of Field on an escutcheon of pretence, as borne by Arthur Duncombe, of Kilnwick Percy, born in 1806. He served as an Admiral in the Royal Navy, and was Lord of the Admiralty in 1852. He was Groom-in-waiting to Queen Victoria 1841-6, MP for York 1851-68 and married, in 1836, Delia, daughter and co-heiress of John Wilmer Field. Admiral Duncombe died in 1889.
