Worked in red, green, calicos, and orange on white cotton ground in sixteen squares of various designs including Rose Wreath, Rose of Sharon, and roses isssuing from urns, with each square inscribed in ink with various names and dates, each square also inscribed "Claysville, Pa," surrounded by a continuous bi-colored leaf and rose border enclosed by a red binding, the whole with diamond quilting

Lot Essay

This coverlet, created by sixteen people from Claysville, Pennsylvania, was presented to Major McCoy, an employee of the B & O Railroad. According to tradition, Major McCoy was stationed in Claysville while the railroad was being built, and was given this quilt on his departure.

The following names are inscribed in ink under each square, "Lydia L. Linens, Maggie F. Bell, Mollie A. Ritzell, Thomas L. Noble, Billy Henderson, Julia A. Mealy, Francis A. Birch, Maggie J. Durant, Adam Laughlin, Mattie Hutchinson, John Mealy, Jas B. Noble, May Anderson, Mollie Anderson, George P. Wilson, and E. Jane Dennison".
