Lot Essay
James Milderberger Lownds (1798-1854) was the son of Thomas Lownds (see previous lot), and was listed in the New York 1830 census as living on Liberty Street in the first ward. Included in his household are one free white teenage male, one male and female in their twenties and one female between the ages of eighty and ninety.
James was also recorded in the New York City directory of 1836-1837, as living at 112 Liberty Street, and as working at 21 City Hall as the undersheriff. His disappearance from the 1840 census coinciding with the expanded household of Oliver Milderberger Lownds and the indentical address listed in the directory for Oliver and James, suggests that sometime after 1830 James and his family were sharing the same home with Oliver and his family. For a depiction of Oliver Lownds and his wife please see lot 75.
