Lot Essay

With its cupid bow corners, cavetto molding, concave fluted shell-carved drawer, scalloped apron and embellished knees, this dressing table embodies elements of the Philadelphia Rococo style. With similar characteristics to both the "Garvan" and "Deshler" carver, it is closely related to a dressing table and high chest of drawers with related carved scalloped skirts, concave fluted shells and knees, all suggesting the work of a single hand.

The related dressing table is illustrated in Sack, American Antiques from Israel Sack Collection, vol. VII, p. 1938, fig. P5239. The high chest of drawers was sold at Sotheby's New York, June 26, 1987, lot 137.
