Lot Essay

This table exhibits all the features of Boston Empire furniture: plain veneered surfaces, backward-scrolling acanthus-topped cabriole legs terminating in carved paw feet, and gilded accents. The use of foliate-pierced brass plates on this piece is rare but familiar from the well-known Boston pier-table and sofa made for Nathan Appleton (see Cooper, Classical Taste in America 1800-1840 (New York, 1993), figs. 37, 86). For a further discussion see Page Talbott's "Boston Empire Furniture," in The Magazine Antiques (Part I, May 1975, pp.878-887; Part II, May 1976, pp.1004-1013).
