Lot Essay

This elegant sofa posses the elements associated with the height of the Classical style developed in New York between 1820-1840: the tablet crest and seat rail rail, the scaled dolphin supports, feathered and acanthus carved knees, and hairy paw feet. A related example with scaled supports is located in The Metropolitan Museum of Art and is illustrated in Marilynn Johnson, et al 19th century America: Furniture and other Decorative Arts (New York, 1970) no. 45. A closely related example in the collection of Yale University is illustrated in Patricia Kane's 300 Years of American Seating Furniture: Chairs and Beds from the Mabel Brady Garvan and Other Collections at Yale University (Boston, 1976) p. 251, fig. 234.
