Randolph (CSA Secretary of War), headed 'Head Quarters Valley District, Staunton, (Va.)', contents discusses recent promotion of Lt. Col. S. Critchfield to Col. and the prospect of his being given command of his own regiment, Jackson notes that he is his Chief of Artillery and that he does not want to lose him, 'I would regard his leaving his present position, for the purpose of taking command of a regiment, as detrimental to the interest of the Public Service...', 7¾ x 9" on pale blue stationery, pasted on slightly larger piece of beige paper resulting in some purple staining from the adhesive throughout the letter and affecting the signature, otherwise fine, a very scarce 'Stonewall' Jackson field letter, ex Sonneborn
